Inspired by the book, Prayers For Bobby, by Leroy Aaron.
-
- Bobby G came into our world
- a beautiful and healthy baby boy
- a smiling baby who rarely cried
- always gave a loving hug
-
- Walking and running at a young age
- exploring every corner of the house
- wasn’t long, he wanted to see more
- back garden promised much more to explore
- butterflies he loved to chase
- to every part of the yard
-
- As he grew, it was by himself he’d rather play
- Eddie and Joy liked to tumble and fall
- Bobby thought little of this
- and liked to play it even less
-
- A sensitive boy, his feelings hurt easy
- a silent and withdrawn teen, he became
- always wanting to fly away
- he loved his family and they loved him
- this he knew without doubt
-
- In his heart, he knew he was different
- he knew no words to explain his feelings
- so he grew, teenage years already here
- it was now he became aware
- what it was that set him apart
-
- He tried so hard to make it go away
- to his horror, he stayed the same
- two or three years, he lived in fear
- his deep, dark secret would be found
-
- When a boy is fifteen
- life promises to be exciting
- a boy on the threshold of becoming a man
- all the mysteries to be explored
-
- To his horror, he could no longer deny
- to have become what all condemn
- the very worst thing a man can be
- take a arm or a leg, even my life, if you must
- anything else, but please, not this
-
- These are the fears Bobby fought alone
- Bobby knew he had to share his secret
- he could not handle this on his own
- his brother Eddie, he loved so much
- he prayed so hard, it was
- like his brother he could become
-
- To his brother, he broke his silence
- very aware Eddie might reject him
- to his relief, his brother did not hate
- having unburdened his heavy secret,
- Bobby felt better for a while
-
- It wasn’t long before he was down again
- he could not hang with being gay
- so he swallowed a bunch of pills
- now his brother was scared as well,
- breaking a confidence, he knew was wrong
- wasn’t it worse if his brother died by his hand
- this is how he came to tell Mum
-
- Mum thought Bobby was ill
- she and God would make him well
- only one way this could be done
- the power of prayer will cure her son
- so began Mum’s campaign
-
- The struggle began between Mother and Son
- to rid her boy of his pain
- it must be said in Mum’s defence
- in her heart, she believed
- this was best for her son
-
- A year or more, but less than two
- Bobby tried his Mum’s way
- Bobby knew for the prayers to work
- being gay must be a choice
- with all his heart, Bobby knew
- it wasn’t his choice to be gay
- Bobby knew he was born this way
-
- He could pray for years to come
- and no change would be done
- this was the truth Bobby knew
- it was the religious lies drilled into his head
- that he found so hard to remove
-
- Threats of eternal damnation
- he knew to be untrue
- his intellect told him this was so
- but the lies kept their control
-
- It is said Bobby gave up on love
- this is true in a way
- it wasn’t the love of others
- Bobby knew he was loved:
- Bobby gave up trying
- to love who he was
