Beauty and Youth -- a poem by Colin Kelly

Beauty and Youth

They say today is different,

that now beauty and youth are obsessive.

But reading a fairy tale shows that there is no difference,

it is the same as it was many years ago;

Snow White,

Cinderella,

Sleeping Beauty,

Robin Hood,

Tarzan,

Sir Lancelot,

and so many other fairy tales

show that beauty and youth were perhaps

even more of an obsession.

A beautiful princess was the subject of many a fairy tale,

with perhaps a daring rescue by a handsome prince.

Today the girls are not princesses,

they just act like that’s who they should be,

how they should be treated.

“Daddy’s little princess,”

“Mommy’s little girl,”

tight tops, bare midriffs, makeup,

these are all different, not part of any fairy tale.

But are they that different?

Today the boys are not princes,

they just act like that’s who they should be,

how they should be treated.

“Daddy’s big man,”

“Mommy’s big boy,”

designer jeans, Air Jordans, iPhones, iPads,

these are all different, not part of any fairy tale.

But are they that different?

Today teens are pampered,

asking their parents for everything,

getting most anything they want,

even though they think they don’t get enough.

Their parents just look on and smile.

They know there will be a resolution,

when their little princess,

their big boy,

marries and has a teen of his or her own.

Then their parents will look on and smile,

because their little princess,

their big boy,

going through what they went through,

knows why their parents are smiling.

They say they are different than when they were teens.

But they aren’t that different.
