Friendships -- a flash fiction story by Colin Kelly

You can have all kinds of friends. But what kind is the most important?

Friends are like the layers of an onion.
The outside layer has acquaintances.
The next layer has occasional friends.
The next layer has online friends.
The next layer has casual friends.
As you peel away layers each has friends who are closer and more important.
When you reach the innermost layer that surrounds you, the core, those are the most important friends, your best friends.
But an onion isn't very useful with just the core and the innermost layer.
You need the entire onion with all of its layers.
Just like you need all of your layers of friends.
