Batting Practice -- a flash fiction story by Colin Kelly

We all know that love can be a distraction, but during batting practice that distraction can be painful...

WHACK!!  I’m between first and second base watching batting practice. Coach Conroy’s pitching to each player until they hit the ball. A few take a lot of swings. WHACK!!  Others one or two. WHACK!!  I’m shagging balls and tossing them back to the pitcher’s mound.

WHACK!!  There’s movement in the bleachers behind first base. It’s Greg. WHACK!!  Oh my God, he looks good! Doris is with him. Damn! WHACK!!  Why’d I fall for a guy who’s so obviously straight? Doris pokes Greg’s arm and points to me, and they both wave.

WHACK!!  Someone yells, “Duck!” then my head explodes and everything goes black.

When I wake up my head hurts like hell. “Where am I? What happened?”

“Kevin! You’re awake! You’re in the hospital.” It’s Greg. He’s holding my hand, squeezing it. “You got hit by a line drive. It’s my fault.”

“What? Why!”

“I distracted you by waving. If you’d been paying attention...” Greg’s crying! “You’ve been in a coma for three days. I thought you were going to die. I love you, man!”

“You love me?”

“I love you, Kevin. I LOVE YOU!”

I’m smiling; my head doesn’t hurt any longer. “Me too, Greg. I’ve always loved you!”
